TANQIA wins ‘Best Sustainable Growth Strategy Middle East 2022’ accolade

TANQIA – the first privately owned wastewater collection and treatment company to be regulated in the UAE – has received the prestigious ‘Best Sustainable Growth Strategy Middle East 2022’ award from Capital Finance International (CFI.co).

CFI shone a spotlight on the business as “a utility provider with a critical-need solution and far-sighted business vision”. In a statement, the Award’s judging panel noted that TANQIA “affirms its mission in its name, which means 'purify' in Arabic”.

“As the first privately owned, government-regulated wastewater collection and treatment utility in the UAE, TANQIA deploys state-of-the-art technology and deep industry expertise to strengthen water resiliency in Fujairah, which, like much of the Gulf region, relies on desalination and underground aquifers for its water needs,” the statement continued.

“With declining ground water reserves and rising salinity caused by over-pumping and seawater ingress, the use of treated wastewater is even more crucial. TANQIA serves a concession area in Fujairah via a wastewater collection network running 546km. The Utility has revised its expansion plans to accommodate the recent boom in population growth – and the corresponding spike in demand for wastewater services.”

Driving down costs, lowering emissions and accommodating future demand

“The first phase of the Revised Expansion Plan is slated for completion by the end of the year, and the second Phase by mid-2023,” the statement from CFI’s judging panel continued. “TANQIA will increase installed treatment capacities from 16,000 to 46,000m3 per day and provide 1.5 billion gallons of high-quality effluent for sale through the distribution network developed by its partner Etihad Water and Electricity, a utility itself (EWE). TANQIA aims to drive down the costs of its operations and sale to partner of highly treated wastewater for reuse in restricted irrigation, while promoting sustainability and accommodating for future demand,” the judging panel added.

“TANQIA's upcoming Green Energy Project is expected to cover 40 per cent of the treatment plant's average annual energy requirements from solar energy and lower emissions by 6,061 tons of CO2 per year.”

In recognition of the above achievements, the CFl.co jury presented repeat winner TANQIA with the 2022 Best Sustainable Growth Strategy (Middle East) award.
